Is it worth ending a friendship when one friend disrespects the collective struggle of the other friend’s race?
I’m the last person to try and “do math” to make a point. Even so, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to conclude that while the risk of facing violent crime has gone down for most, Blacks face a uniquely treacherous threat that the rest of the population does not: the threat of being targeted by the very people who are meant to be our protectors.
My experience with racism is not a story of neglect and systematic abuse. It’s not about how White America is literally or violently holding me back. It is about ignorance. It’s personal, it’s raw and it’s real. And I’m terrified of sharing it.
