An excerpt from the second installment of our series on prisoners’ lives:
Less than a year out of prison, Niven Teng enjoys his freedom, sitting with his friend, watching TV and listening to music.
“I like oldies a lot,’ he said. ‘And Ray, he really likes country music … right Ray?”
After serving 2 1/2 years in prison on weapons charges connected to trafficking heroin, Teng said Ray is one of two close friends he has left.
Before he was locked up, he was part of a group of eight friends. When he was arrested he “refused to snitch”, he said.
“I lost a lot of good friends when I went in…one of them got murdered, one [over-dosed], two of them is in Florida and one of them is in prison,” he said.
